Learn the fundamentals of EV electrical systems and develop the knowledge required to understand Electrical System Officer (ESO) responsibilities and high-voltage safety.

This course is designed for engineering students, EV enthusiasts, Formula Student teams, electric motorsport teams, EV technicians, workshop personnel, and professionals who want structured knowledge of EV electrical and high-voltage systems.

You will begin with the electrical fundamentals required to understand EV safety, including voltage, current, resistance, electrical power, energy, efficiency, DC and AC systems, electrical circuits, power sources, measurements, and circuit diagrams.

The course then moves into EV electrical and high-voltage system fundamentals. You will learn how an EV electrical architecture is organized, including the low-voltage system, high-voltage system, tractive system, and energy storage system. You will also study major HV components such as the HV battery or accumulator, HV cables, connectors, fuses, contactors, pre-charge circuits, DC link, inverter, electric motor, and DC/DC converter.

You will also learn the role of an Electrical System Officer, including ESO responsibilities, authority, accountability, communication, safety responsibilities, and working with an EV team. The course introduces the Formula Student safety environment and explains how electrical safety requirements, team organization, documentation, and safe working culture support vehicle operation and testing.

The course follows a structured progression from electrical fundamentals to EV/HV system understanding and ESO safety responsibilities, creating a foundation for the advanced safety, risk assessment, battery safety, HV isolation, diagnostics, emergency response, practical training, and qualification assessment covered later in the program.

By completing the course, learners will have a structured understanding of EV electrical systems, HV components, electrical safety concepts, and the responsibilities expected of an Electrical System Officer.
